About
Born in Vienna, Austria in 1909, Gies moved to Amsterdam, Netherlands in 1920. In 1933, she began working for Otto Frank, Anne Frank's father, at his business. When the Frank family went into hiding in the Secret Annex in 1942, Gies and a few others provided them with food, supplies, and emotional support for over two years. After the group was discovered and arrested in 1944, Gies saved Anne's diary, hoping to one day give it back to her. Tragically, only Otto Frank survived the Holocaust, and Gies handed over Anne's diary to him after the war. Gies' actions in sheltering the Frank family demonstrated immense bravery and humanity. After the war, she continued her involvement with Anne Frank's legacy, dedicating her life to promoting tolerance, understanding, and the importance of speaking out against injustice. Miep Gies passed away in 2010, but her selfless acts continue to inspire generations of people around the world.
