The statue was a gift to the United States from the people of France and was dedicated on October 28, 1886. It represents Libertas, the Roman goddess of freedom, and holds a torch and a tabula ansata (a tablet evoking the law) inscribed with the date of the American Declaration of Independence. The statue is made of copper and stands on a pedestal made of granite, which includes an exhibit on its history. It has become a symbol of freedom and democracy, and is one of the most visited tourist attractions in the United States.
