Born in 1920 in British India, Rahman played a crucial role in the country's struggle for independence from Pakistan and served as the prime minister of Bangladesh from 1972 until 1975. Rahman's political career began in the late 1940s when he joined the Muslim League, advocating for the rights and autonomy of East Pakistan. However, disillusioned with the discrimination faced by the Bengali population, he later became a key figure in the East Pakistan Awami League, a political party that championed the cause of autonomy for East Pakistan. In 1970, Rahman led his party to a historic victory in the national elections, securing a majority in the National Assembly. However, the ruling party in West Pakistan refused to relinquish power, leading to widespread unrest and eventually a declaration of independence by Rahman on March 26, 1971. During the Bangladesh Liberation War that followed, Rahman became the leader of the newly formed provisional government, organizing resistance against the Pakistani military. After a nine-month-long armed conflict, Bangladesh emerged as an independent nation on December 16, 1971. As President of Bangladesh, Rahman worked tirelessly to rebuild the war-torn country and establish a democratic system. He implemented numerous social and economic reforms, such as nationalizing industries, expanding education, and promoting the rights of women. However, Rahman's tenure as President was short-lived. In August 1975, a military coup took place, resulting in his assassination along with several members of his family. Despite his untimely demise, Sheikh Mujibur Rahman remains a widely respected figure in Bangladesh and is often considered the father of the nation. His contributions to the nation's independence and his efforts in nation-building have solidified his legacy as one of Bangladesh's most revered leaders. The Sheikh Mujibur Rahman Memorial Museum, located in Dhaka, serves as a reminder of his life and achievements.
