She was born in 1993 in the village of Kojo, near Sinjar, in northern Iraq. In August 2014, when she was just 21 years old, she was captured by ISIS militants along with thousands of other Yazidi women and girls and subjected to horrendous acts of violence and sexual slavery. After managing to escape from captivity, Murad became an advocate for the Yazidi minority affected by the ISIS genocide. She worked tirelessly to bring attention to the plight of Yazidis and campaigned for justice for the crimes committed by ISIS. Murad's advocacy work gained international recognition and she was appointed as a United Nations Goodwill Ambassador for the Dignity of Survivors of Human Trafficking. She addressed the United Nations Security Council, testified before the United States Congress, and appeared before numerous other international bodies to raise awareness about the Yazidis and seek justice for the victims. In recognition of her courage and determination, Murad was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize in 2018, alongside Denis Mukwege, a Congolese gynecologist. The Nobel Committee honored her for her efforts to end the use of sexual violence as a weapon of war and armed conflict. Since receiving the Nobel Peace Prize, Murad has continued her activism and advocacy work. She founded the Nadia Murad Foundation, which aims to increase awareness about the plight of persecuted minorities and advocate for their rights.
