Montesquieu believed that in order to prevent tyranny and maintain a well-functioning government, the powers of the state should be divided into three separate branches: the executive, the legislative, and the judiciary. His ideas greatly influenced the formation of modern democratic systems, including the United States Constitution. Montesquieu also wrote extensively on a wide range of topics, including religion, anthropology, and climate, and his works continue to be studied and discussed by scholars today.
