The movement's origins can be traced back to the efforts of Henry Dunant, who witnessed the aftermath of the Battle of Solferino in 1859 and was inspired to establish an organization to assist wounded soldiers. This led to the creation of the International Committee of the Red Cross in 1863. The movement's primary goals include providing medical care to the wounded in times of conflict, promoting and enforcing humanitarian law, and delivering emergency relief to those affected by natural disasters and other emergencies. It also strives to prevent and alleviate human suffering wherever it may occur. The movement operates based on seven fundamental principles, which include humanity, impartiality, neutrality, independence, voluntary service, unity, and universality. These principles guide the actions and operations of all components of the movement. The movement has played a significant role in various conflicts and crises throughout its history, including World War I, World War II, the Rwandan Genocide, and the Syrian Civil War. It has also been involved in numerous disaster response and recovery efforts, such as earthquake relief in Haiti and tsunami relief in Southeast Asia. Today, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement continues to provide vital assistance and support to millions of people around the world, working tirelessly to alleviate suffering and promote human dignity.
