Astronauts are selected from a diverse range of backgrounds, including military pilots, scientists, engineers, and medical doctors, among others. They undergo rigorous training to prepare for the physical and psychological demands of space travel, including experiencing weightlessness, operating spacecraft systems, and dealing with emergencies. The first human to travel into space was Soviet cosmonaut Yuri Gagarin on April 12, 1961, aboard the Vostok 1 spacecraft. Since then, astronauts from various countries have ventured into space, contributing to our understanding of the universe, conducting experiments, and building and maintaining the International Space Station (ISS).
