Launched on July 16, 1969, the mission was crewed by astronauts Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin, and Michael Collins. After a four-day journey, Armstrong and Aldrin descended to the lunar surface in the lunar module named "Eagle" while Collins orbited above in the command module named "Columbia". On July 20, 1969, Armstrong became the first person to step onto the lunar surface, famously uttering the words "That's one small step for man, one giant leap for mankind". Aldrin joined him shortly after. They conducted scientific experiments, collected moon samples, and planted the American flag on the Moon. After spending about two and a half hours outside the spacecraft, they returned to the lunar module and eventually reunited with Collins in the command module. The mission marked a significant achievement in space exploration and the Space Race, as the United States became the first nation to land humans on another celestial body. Apollo 11 safely returned to Earth on July 24, 1969, splashing down in the Pacific Ocean. This mission is widely considered one of the greatest accomplishments in human history, and it furthered our understanding of outer space and the Moon.
