However, with the support of her husband, she enrolled in the Women's College in Calcutta to study medicine. In 1886, Joshi became the first Indian woman to study abroad when she was accepted at the Women's Medical College of Pennsylvania in the United States. She graduated with a medical degree in 1886 and returned to India. Upon her return, Joshi faced resistance from the patriarchal society and discrimination in the medical field. Despite these challenges, she started her clinic in Mumbai and practiced medicine, specializing in women's health issues. Anandi Gopal Joshi worked tirelessly for women's education and health in India. She advocated for the empowerment of women and fought against child marriage. Joshi also actively participated in social and political activities, supporting the Indian independence movement and working to uplift the marginalized sections of society. Unfortunately, Anandi Gopal Joshi's life was cut short when she contracted tuberculosis at the age of 21 and passed away on 26 February 1887. Despite her short life, her achievements and contributions had a lasting impact on women's education and healthcare in India.
