About
He was born in 1864 in Germany and studied medicine at the University of Würzburg. After working as a physician for several years, Alzheimer became interested in the fields of psychiatry and neurology, particularly the study of brain pathology. In 1901, he encountered a patient named Auguste Deter, who exhibited symptoms of severe memory loss and confusion. Alzheimer closely examined Deter's brain after her death and identified abnormal clumps and tangles of proteins, now known as amyloid plaques and neurofibrillary tangles, respectively. He published his findings, describing a new form of dementia that later became known as Alzheimer's disease. Alzheimer continued to research and publish on the topic, contributing significantly to the understanding of the disease and its progression. He died in 1915 at the age of 51, and his work has had a lasting impact on the field of neurodegenerative diseases. To honor his contributions, the condition he discovered was named Alzheimer's disease in recognition of his pioneering research in this area.
