He was born on July 20, 1873, in Cabangu, Minas Gerais, Brazil. Santos-Dumont is known for his contributions to the development of airships and airplanes. In 1898, Santos-Dumont built and successfully flew the "Santos-Dumont 1", a small airship that was powered by a lightweight internal combustion engine. This accomplishment made him one of the first individuals to demonstrate the practicality of airships. Over the next few years, he continued to improve his designs, creating a series of airships that gradually grew larger and more sophisticated. Santos-Dumont's most famous airship was the "Santos-Dumont No. 6", or the "1901 dirigible". This airship made history by successfully completing a public flight around the Eiffel Tower in Paris, France, in 1901. The event captured international attention and propelled Santos-Dumont to fame. He went on to set various aviation records, including the fastest speed achieved by an airship and the first flight recognized by the Aéro-Club de France. Not content with airships alone, Santos-Dumont turned his attention to fixed-wing aircraft. In 1906, he built his first airplane, the "Santos-Dumont 14-bis", also known as the "Oiseau de Proie" (The Bird of Prey). This aircraft, with its boxkite-like design, made significant advancements in stability and control, leading to successful flights. The 14-bis was awarded the first aeronautical prize in the world by the Deutsch de la Meurthe Foundation. Santos-Dumont continued to experiment with aviation throughout his life, pushing the boundaries of what was possible. He made several contributions to aeronautical engineering, including aeronautic brakes, landing gears, and safety devices such as the safety belt. However, Santos-Dumont's passion for aviation was affected by the use of airplanes as weapons during World War I. He became disillusioned and withdrew from the public eye, eventually taking his own life in 1932. Santos-Dumont's contributions to aviation were significant and had a lasting impact on the development of air transportation. He remains an important figure in the history of aviation, especially in Brazil, where he is widely regarded as a national hero.
